Four hours later, we were in Nova’s apartment on the second floor of the lodge, surrounded by an array of snacks spread out on the coffee table in her living room.

“This is not what I thought you meant when you said you had an adventurous idea,” Olivia gasped, turning her face this way and that while staring into her handheld mirror. Bold red highlights newly adorned her hair, making her look like the badass Ember wolf she was on the inside.

Setting the hair dryer aside, Nova fluffed and styled Olivia’s hair. “There’s nothing like a fresh color to make you feel like a new person.”

I desperately hoped she was right.

“You’re next. Your color should be set in a few minutes,” she told me, seeming totally in her element.

A short while later, rinsed, damp hair tumbled down my back, and I grinned into the mirror. The pink color was vibrant, cheerful. Sexy.

“Not many people can pull off this shade of pink, but girl, you look incredible,” Nova cooed as she blow-dried my hair, then styled it into soft waves that framed my face and hung past my shoulders.

I touched my cheek and ran my fingers through my tresses, hardly believing the reflection was mine. “This is exactly what I needed.”

It was liberating to look into the mirror and not see my sister staring back at me. To not feel quite so guilty I was living her life. Yipping supportively, my wolf sent a burst of warmth through my chest.

“I wonder what Hunter will think.” Nova grinned and waggled her eyebrows.

“Who says his opinion matters?” I teased.

Olivia’s sharp laugh had her grinning ear to ear by the time she controlled herself. “My brother has certainly met his match in you.”

I shrugged, not the least bit sorry to be a pain in his ass.

“Have you heard from him?” Nova broached the subject we’d been steadfastly ignoring all day.

Events of the other night were like an elephant in the room, enormous and hard to ignore, but we’d each done our best to cling to a semblance of normality. It was fragile, though, and the moment Hunter’s name was brought up, it shattered into a million splintered little pieces.

“No.” I looked away, tucking my hair behind my ear, taking a moment to also tuck away the hundreds of things I was feeling. “He wasn’t home before we left to come here,” I said, truly worried about him.

We may be experts at getting under each other’s skin, but I didn’t want to see him hurt, or worse.

The High Alpha was as unpredictable as the Shadow Beast and just as lethal. Had Hunter confronted him about that night? Why hadn’t we heard from him, and where could he be?

“I’m sure he and Tristan are just dealing with the aftermath of… well, everything.” Olivia winced. “They have to deal with her family and the pack as word spreads about what happened.”

“Someone has to stop him,” I murmured quietly, keeping the treasonous words just between the three of us. Thankfully, Nova and Olivia knew the ‘him’ I spoke of referred to the High Alpha.
