Four hours later, we were in Novaâs apartment on the second floor of the lodge, surrounded by an array of snacks spread out on the coffee table in her living room.
âThis is not what I thought you meant when you said you had an adventurous idea,â Olivia gasped, turning her face this way and that while staring into her handheld mirror. Bold red highlights newly adorned her hair, making her look like the badass Ember wolf she was on the inside.
Setting the hair dryer aside, Nova fluffed and styled Oliviaâs hair. âThereâs nothing like a fresh color to make you feel like a new person.â
I desperately hoped she was right.
âYouâre next. Your color should be set in a few minutes,â she told me, seeming totally in her element.
A short while later, rinsed, damp hair tumbled down my back, and I grinned into the mirror. The pink color was vibrant, cheerful. Sexy.
âNot many people can pull off this shade of pink, but girl, you look incredible,â Nova cooed as she blow-dried my hair, then styled it into soft waves that framed my face and hung past my shoulders.
I touched my cheek and ran my fingers through my tresses, hardly believing the reflection was mine. âThis is exactly what I needed.â
It was liberating to look into the mirror and not see my sister staring back at me. To not feel quite so guilty I was living her life. Yipping supportively, my wolf sent a burst of warmth through my chest.
âI wonder what Hunter will think.â Nova grinned and waggled her eyebrows.
âWho says his opinion matters?â I teased.
Oliviaâs sharp laugh had her grinning ear to ear by the time she controlled herself. âMy brother has certainly met his match in you.â
I shrugged, not the least bit sorry to be a pain in his ass.
âHave you heard from him?â Nova broached the subject weâd been steadfastly ignoring all day.
Events of the other night were like an elephant in the room, enormous and hard to ignore, but weâd each done our best to cling to a semblance of normality. It was fragile, though, and the moment Hunterâs name was brought up, it shattered into a million splintered little pieces.
âNo.â I looked away, tucking my hair behind my ear, taking a moment to also tuck away the hundreds of things I was feeling. âHe wasnât home before we left to come here,â I said, truly worried about him.
We may be experts at getting under each otherâs skin, but I didnât want to see him hurt, or worse.
The High Alpha was as unpredictable as the Shadow Beast and just as lethal. Had Hunter confronted him about that night? Why hadnât we heard from him, and where could he be?
âIâm sure he and Tristan are just dealing with the aftermath of⦠well, everything.â Olivia winced. âThey have to deal with her family and the pack as word spreads about what happened.â
âSomeone has to stop him,â I murmured quietly, keeping the treasonous words just between the three of us. Thankfully, Nova and Olivia knew the âhimâ I spoke of referred to the High Alpha.
